Breast Screening

Regular breast screenings are the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it is easiest to treat. Women aged 40 and over should get a breast screening and clinical breast exam every year. Women over the age of 40 are at the highest risk for breast cancer, yet they are the least likely to get a breast screening.

In choosing a screening facility, women should make sure it is certified by the Food and Drug Administartion (unless it is a Veterans Health Administration facility). By law, all facilities must be certified. A breast screening can detect cancers several years before a women or her health care provider can feel a lump.
